MACEIÓ, ALAGOAS

This month I travelled only twice by plane, from Lisbon to Maceió (Brazil, or more accurately Brasil in portuguese) and back. Maceió is the capital city of the State of Alagoas. Apart from the city itself and beaches in town and nearby, I visited two small towns, Marechal Deodoro and Floriano Peixoto; the curiosity is that they were the birth towns of both persons whose name they have adopted. Marechal Deodoro is a small XVII-XVIII century portuguese-style town like so many others in the country, with old churches, monasteries and homes. These persons were XIX century military and politicians, very much influent on the downfall of the Empire - plus, respectively, the first and second Presidents of Brasil.

Additionaly I took a day excursion to the site where the big River São Francisco empties into the sea. It included a boat trip down the river from Piaçubuçu, a walk on the dunes near the junction point and a buffet luncheon with, of course, fish, meat and brasilian-style beans (feijoada à brasileira). In annex there are two pictures of the river, which marks the separation line between several States and between Alagoas and Sergipe on its final endevour into the sea.

MOROCCO

Next Sunday I will travel to Casablanca, from Lisbon, for some days there.
My main aim in to visit two World Heritage sites: El Jadida ( old portuguese Mazagão ) and Volubilis. If I do it, I will have already visited 6 of the 8 WH sites in Morocco.
